These photographs were especially commissioned by The Global Fund who engaged Gideon Mendel to create a poster exhibition about their projects and the general HIV/AIDS crisis in Swaziland for the XV International AIDS Conference which is taking place in Bangkok from July 11-16, 2004. This work is taken from a series of eleven posters which he produced for them. They all combine images with personal testimonies from people on the frontline of the struggle against this disease. They show the extreme stress HIV/AIDS has placed on the people of Swaziland and how the billions that the fund is now spending globally is starting to impact on the lives of Swazi people who are living with HIV or AIDS. They show, crucially, how the right support can help communities mobilize to fight against even the most difficult of circumstances.
