This peaceful student protest in early May 1989 would turn into one of the bloodiest events in modern history less than a month later. University students staged a seven-week protest in favor of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and immediate dialogue with Party executives; thousands of demonstrators would be gunned down on the morning of June 4, 1989 by the People's Liberation Army in one of the worst massacres in history.
