Lech Walesa, leader of the Polish "Solidarity" trade union movement, at a rally in Bydgoszcz. The elections came after an agreement to hold them was reached in April between the Communist government and Solidarity. On June 5, the Solidarity movement won, by an overwhelming majority, in the first free election in Poland, Solidarity winning 96 out of 100 seats in the new Senate.
