Demonstrations Take Place after Abortive Russian Coup
A group of Soviet demonstrators gathered in front of the Russian Parliament building joyously applaud an address by Russian Federation President Boris Yeltsin, democratically elected in July 1991. The demonstration took place the day after the three-day attempted coup on Moscow from August 19-21, 1991. The coup, staged in protest against Mikhail Gorbachev's move toward more democratic policies, ultimately failed, but seriously weakened Gorbachev's power and that of the Communist Party.
