Nomfumaneko Yako, a schoolgirl of 15 who is ill with AIDS, is examined by Dr Herman Reuter on the day she is due to start her first dose of antiretroviral treatment. This was at the Village Clinic (in Lusikiski town) where the Siyaphila La (We are living here) HIV-treatment programme is making antiretroviral treatment easily available in this poor rural district. Her body is extremely emaciated due to the ravages of the AIDS virus. She was extremely ill, with a CD4 count of 46. Sadly she began the treatment too late, and died a few weeks later.
