China - Interiors of Chinese Peasant Homes

Hua Wei Qiang (L) used to be a full-time farmer and village leader. He now works in business, but refuses to divulge exactly what he does. He is never in his village and only returns to the region for the New Year or the annual harvest at full moon. He built his house three years ago. Rich peasants abandoned agriculture to take up more lucrative occupations which they do not like to discuss. They build new houses with many rooms, however, the majority are empty. Only the living room and bedrooms are decorated with new, relatively expensive furniture. The rest of the house looks as if it has been abandoned.
