South Africa - Former South African President Nelson Mandela - Receives Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award
Former South African President and Nobel Peace Laureate Nelson Mandela pauses for thought during a ceremony in which he received the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award from Nobel Literature Laureate Nadine Gordimer. Mandela received the award in recognition of his embodiment of the struggle for human rights and his ongoing advocacy work in new arenas of challenge for human rights such as the fight against HIV/AIDS.
