Brazil - Poverty - Residents of Occupied Building

Samara Pereira de Carvalho, 8 months pregnant, is carried away by her husband (L) and other residents of the Prestes Maia 911 building, as her daughter Sara looks on. Samara fainted during an early morning demonstration by the Prestes Maia residents, demanding a solution to their housing problem and protesting the February 15th eviction threat. Over 1,500 people without a housing opportunities occupied the abandoned building in 2003 as part of the MSTC (Movement for the Roofless Downtown) socailist movement. There are over 50,000 homeless people living on the streets of Sao Paulo and more than 5 million others living in precarious housing conditions on the outskirsts of the city.
