Brazil - Housing Eviction - Anti-Riot Police Forces
Anti-riot police charge the inhabitants of the occupied building known as Prestes Maia 911 in downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil. The occupants had blocked one of city's main arteries, precisely where the building stands, in an effort to call attention to their housing demands and possible eviction. All residents are part of the MSTC socialist movement (Movement for the Roofless in Downtown) who occupied the building in 2003 in an effort to obatin proper housing. Many of its residents cannot afford to pay rent, were homeless or living on the outskirts of the city in unstable living conditions.
