China - 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China

Hua Guofeng (top left), former Premier of the People's Republic of China from 1976-80, sleeps during a speech delivered by President of China Hu Jintao (not pictured) at the opening of the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, 15 October 2007. Hua Guofeng was designated by the late Mao Tse-tung to replace him as Chairman of the Communist Party, but was sidelined by Deng Xiaoping. The National Congress is held to outline the party's plans for the upcoming five years. Despite having a population of over 1.3 billion people, the Communist Party of China has only 73 million members.
