China - Economy - A Story of Migrants

Cai Xingju, her new husband Ding Zhifa and her parents. Cai Xingju's parents live in Nanfen, a village located 4 kilometers from that of Ding Zhifa. Cai Xingju is the youngest of the family. Her three other sisters have already left the village to work in town. For Cai Xingju's dowry, her father Cai Chuangfu and mother Qiao Ying have spent 6,000 Yuans, the equivalent of two year's of savings. The first time they met Ding Zhifa, they refused to agree to the wedding, saying that he was, "Not rich enough and his skin is too black". According to them, the young man looked like a farler form Anhui, when they had been dreaming about a man from the city. After their first meeting, they gathered information from other villagers and were reassured by the good reputation this potential son-in-law held.
