China - Economy - A Migrant Story - Workers

Ding Zhifa lines up at the canteen of the construction site, which provides 400 meals, 3 times a day. A plate costs between 3-5 yuans ($0.50-$0.75). Dormitories, however, are free of charge for the workers. Ding Zhifa specialises in coating. He learned to use a trowel when he started working on the site. Ding Zhifa, 25, joined a manager coming from Anhui Province to work on a construction site five years ago in Beijing. The site manager knew another inhabitant of Ding Zhifa's village, and this connection led the young man to finding his current employment in Beijing. He earns 65 Yuans during his 10-hour days, about $300 per month, and works seven-day weeks. His salary is higher than what he could hope for in Hefei, where workers earn closer to $230 per month.
