China - Economy - A Migrant Story

Cai Xingju and Ding Zhifa in front of Chairman Mao's portrait, the "Father of all Chinese". Ding Zhifa promised his new wife a tour of Beijing. A week after their arrival in Beijing to join the construction site which employed them, they asked for an afternoon off without pay to go visit the historical monuments. Cai Xingju is impressed by how crowded and clean the places are that she is seeing. Ding Zhifa holds up a postcard the couple bought of Tiananmen Square to send their parents, to show them the place were Mao proclaimed the New Popular Republic of China. They 60 Yuans (about $8) they paid to enter the Forbidden City doesn't give them access to the house of the Emperor.
