China - Economy - A Migrant Story - Wedding

Countryside of the north of Anhui Province. Located 1,000 miles to the south of Beijing. 75% of the inhabitants are farmers. Migration to the larger cities began in the 1980s. Since then, more than 10 million of the 63 million locals have left to find work to cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. These migrants return to their homeland with more than $1 billion each year. This money supports their native province. On February 25, Ding Zhifa and Cai Xingju wed in Wei Ding, a village of 400 inhabitants located 150 kilometers from Hefei, capital of the Anhui province. The couple met only once in 2005, by way of a meiren, or a go-between. Soon after, they left for Beijing for work. | Location: Wei Ding, Anhui, China.
