China - Economy - A Migrant Story

On the train going to Beijing, Cai Xingju is worried and cannot sleep. She is entering a new life, a new environment. Ding Zhifa understands his wife and explains that, "In China, everybody does like us. It's normal." Travel for 2 people to Beijing costs 162 Yuans (about $23) and takes nearly 20 hours. The couple wed recently in Wei Ding, a village of 400 inhabitants located 150 kilometers from Hefei, capital of the Anhui province. The couple met only once in 2005, by way of a meiren, or a go-between. Ding Zhifa, 25, was advised of the imminence of the wedding by phone, while he was working on a construction site in Beijing. His father met with Cai Xingju, a 24-year-old woman from the neighboring village, for him.
