France - 2008 Paris Auto Show - 2011 Chevrolet Volt
This pre-production Chevrolet Volt is very close to the production version planned for 2011, and incorporates a number of significant changes from the concept version of two years ago. In order to achieve the widely advertised driving range of 40 miles, the Volt body was extensively revised in the wind tunnel, resulting in a highly aerodynamic shape. As before, the Volt is primarily a plug-in hybrid capable of traveling 40 miles without a recharge, or without the onboard gasoline engine kicking in. It is also a series hybrid, meaning the Volt's gasoline engine turns a generator, and the generator in turn charges either the batteries or powers an electric motor that drives the transmission. Thus, the gasoline engine never directly powers the vehicle. Exciting cars like this and others were on display at the 2008 Paris Auto Show.
