Indonesia - Politics - Independence Day Celebrations
Every year Indonesians celebrate their independence on August 17th, the day in 1945 that Sukarno declared independence from the Netherlands. While it took four years of bloodshed before the Dutch admitted defeat and left the country, Indonesians have celebrated the date annually as their national holiday. At the Presidential Palace, reelected President Susilo Bamberg Yudhoyono (L) on July 23, also known as SBY, attend an independence day ceremony.
