Relief of a monkey walking upright from the Tomb of Kheruef

Detail of a relief from the tomb of Kheruef, called Sena'a, TT 192 in the Tombs of the Royals at Thebes. A monkey walking on its hind legs behind a calf. This scene introduced the register with dancers performing ritual dances during royal festivals. Monkeys rank among the most popular motives in all periods, and we find them depicted as pets in many Old Kingdom tombs.
