Painting on ceiling and pillar from the Tomb of Nefertari

Painting on ceiling and pillar from the Tomb of Nefertari

Detail of a painting in the Tomb of Nefertari, QV 66 in the Valley of the Queens at Thebes. Starry sky and pillar with the god Osiris in the Tomb of Queen Nefertari. Nature has always been an important part in the life of the ancient Egyptians. They observed the world around and worshiped many gods connected with nature: Nut, the sky goddess, Geb, the earth god, Horus in shape of a falcon, Hathor in form of a cow. But the nature depicted in a tomb is more than just a picture. It is the representation of the other world. This wonderful scene from the ceiling of the tomb of the beautiful Queen Nefertari shows the blue night sky of the Netherworld with it's golden stars. The god Osiris, Lord of the Otherworld, can be seen on a pillar supporting the ceiling. This decorative motive can be found on ceilings of funerary monuments since the Old Kingdom
