Painting of Sennefer smelling a lotus flower from the Tomb of Sennefer

Detail of a painting in the Tomb of Sennufer, Mayor of the Southern City, TT 96 in the Tombs of the Nobles in Thebes. This wonderful detail of Sennefer comes from a pillar in his burial chamber. Sennefer is smelling a lotus flower, which represented for the ancient Egyptian the idea of rebirth because the lotus flowers close at night and open again in the morning, reflecting the journey of the sun-god.
