Painting of the Eye of Horus from the Tomb of Sennefer
Detail of a painting in the Tomb of Sennefer, Mayor of the Southern City, TT 96 in the Tombs of the Nobles in Thebes. The Eye of Horus was the symbol of protection. The legend says that the god Horus lost his eye during his fight with the god Seth, and it was healed by the power of the god Thoth. The symbol was also used to represent royal power and protection for the deceased in the Afterlife. This detail from the burial chamber of Sennefer shows the eye of Horus, with a red pupil, above Sennefer (not pictured).
