Caricature by Frank Chesworth, 1899, of composer Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), now best remembered for the comic operettas that he wrote in collaboration with the librettist W.S. Gilbert. Such works as The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, H.M.S. Pinafore are enduringly popular. Something of a prodigy, he would have liked to be remembered as a serious composer but his serious works, though popular at the time, are largely forgotten.
