Italy - Religion - First woman ordained priest

Maria Vittoria celebrates mass in the small chapel of the La Casa del Lavoratore charity and recreation center in Milan. Maria Vittoria Longhitano, 35, a married teacher from Sicily living in Milan, will be the first woman ordained as priest in Italy. Her ordination will occur in Rome, just a few steps from the Vatican. Since last year Longhitano has been a member and decon of the small Catholic order called "The Old Catholics", who refuse Papal infallibility and the Immaculate Conception. The ordination will take place in the Anglican Church of All Saints on May 22, 2010. "My ordination represents a great chance for all women of faith. It means hope, it means giving a push to an important debate between Catholics on the issue of denying women the possibility of fulfilling their vocations and being ordained as ministers."
