DRC - Internally Displaced People

Thousands of people displaced from dozens of surrounding villages due to recent fighting gather in a church for shelter adjacent to a base of Pakistani peacekeeping forces in the village of Aveba, Ituri province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, DRC, on June 11, 2006. U.N. forces have made several missions of late to clear the area of local militia groups, and as a result, thousands of Congolese have been displaced from their homes in the months leading up to the first elections in the country in about 40 years. The DRC has been plagued by civil war intermittently for over a decade, and the situation is expected to worsen in the weeks running up to elections as local militias fight to maintain control of given areas. | Location: Aveba, Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.
