An Indonesian riot policeman seen kicking East Timorese pro-independence supporter Joaquim Bernardino Guterres as he tries to run away moments before being fatally shot by an officer in Dili, East Timor, Aug. 26, 1999. The killing, which occurred four days prior to East Timor's vote for independence from Indonesia, came after a clash between pro-independence supporters and the feared Aitarak militia; the police arrived, but instead turned against the pro-independence supporters. These are the first recorded photographs of Indonesian police killing an East Timorese person. Photo by: John Stanmeyer / VII
