Kosovo - the War

Serb forces stand in Gorazdevac, Kosovo, at the funeral of Milan Stevanovic (1979), a Serb policeman who was killed by unknown people in Dakovica, Kosovo, Feb. 5, 1999. Stevanovic was buried in his home village of Gorazdevac. After the 1997 collapse of Albania's economy, widespread looting and ethnic conflict broke out in Albania and Kosovo, a majority Albanian province in southern Serbia, which led to the mass exodus of thousands of ethnic Albanians in 1998 and early 1999; nearly all of these 850,000 refugees returned to Kosovo starting in mid-1999, many seeking revenge against the Serbs.
