Democratic Republic of the Congo - Conflict - The Rape of a Nation
Child soldiers of the Union des Patriotes Congolais wait for their orders in Bule, Ituri District, Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, in December 2007. They are currently the only defense forces in a 25 mile radius. Two days later they pulled out too and Bule was attacked. The DRC contains one of the highest numbers of child soldiers in the world. Many are abducted or recruited by force, and often compelled to follow orders under threat of death. Others join armed groups out of desperation. Denied a childhood and often subjected to horrific violence, child soldiers endure one the most appalling of human rights abuses. | Location: Bule, Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.
