Plastic recycling in China

Plastic recycling in China

A woman sorts plastic bottles at a recycling station in Tangyin, central Chinas Henan province, 10 July 2011. Recycling is a very labour intensive work in China. Every day tens of thousands people sort through garbage to fish out thrown-away plastic bottles. The rapid increase in plastic prices has driven the demand for used PET bottles to new heights. The boom has many causes and the global penetration of PET bottles is just one of many. Four-fifths of the PET bottles are processed into fibers. The recycled plasticis used in cars, for rooftops, in a number of non-woven fabrics and in pharmaceutical and food packaging. | Location: Tangyin, Henan, China.
