Hazare, a 74-year -old self styled Gandhian, is fasting until death to demand a bill for creating an autonomous, powerful anti-corruption agency, known as "Lokpal", a campaign that has drawn support from the middle class Indians and seen millions of them protest against the Government. Hazare was arrested by the Delhi Police before he could start his agitation on August 16, 2011. In April 2011, Mr. Hazare gained national attention when he undertook a hunger strike for a Lokpal ? a tactic that forced officials to invite him and his allies to negotiations over legislation to create such an agency.
