8th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement

Cuban Head of State since 1976 Fidel Castro attends the eighth Summit of Non-Aligned Countries. Khamenei became president in 1981, after leading the Islamic Republican Party in 1980. In 1989, upon the death of Ayatollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic, Khamenei will become the next Supreme Leader.
