Morning strike in Basel

Fools stroll through the streets during the so-called Morning strike ('Morgenstraich') in Basel, Switzerland, 27 February 2012. The traditional Basel carnival kicked off with the Morning strike on the Monday following Ash Wednesday when all street lights in the town are all turned off at 4am. For 72 hours the air will be filled with the noise of pipes and drums from marching bands, some in funny, but some also in spooky masks and costumes. Photo: Patrick Seeger
