Young Cossack students discuss a lesson with their teacher at School #22 in Yeniseisk. The Cossacks were already settled in many of the areas where Bering stopped along his exploratory route, and he was quick to recruit many of them for his arduous expeditions. Today they remain a strong and self-reliant group, which has recently experienced a revived influence in the region, made evident by the opening of this well organized, state-funded co-ed school with 115 students from grades 5 to 11.
