1.2 million people evacuated in east China coast as Typhoon Haikui approaches

Local residents are evacuated from their houses as Typhoon Haikui approaches in Jinwei village, Jinshan district, Shanghai, China, 7 August 2012. Authorities on the east coast rushed to evacuate more than 1.2 million people on Tuesday (7 August 2012) as a powerful typhoon headed towards the commercial hub of Shanghai. The typhoon packed winds of up to 173km/h, the National Meteorological Centre said. The Zhejiang provincial observatory issued a red alert, the most severe on the four-tiered weather warning system. The storm, travelling at 10km/h, was expected to make landfall between Ningbo and Wenzhou in Zhejiang province late Tuesday night or early Wednesday.
