Typhoon Haikui slashes east China

The third tropical cyclone in a week to smash into Chinas east coast claimed two lives, toppled farmhouses and halted transport in Shanghai and surrounding areas on Wednesday (8 August 2012). Typhoon Haikui made landfall south of Ningbo in Zhejiang province early Wednesday, packing winds gusting to 137 km/h. More than three million people in Zhejiang were affected by Haikui, with 2,900 houses severely damaged, the provincial flood prevention office said. Economic losses were put at 6.8 billion yuan (US$1.07 billion). Authorities evacuated two million people, 374,000 in Shanghai and 1.54 million in Zhejiang.
