Iranian earthquakes kill at least 250

Two strong earthquakes in the north-western Iranian province of East Azerbaijan killed at least 250 people and injured more than 1,800, deputy Interior Minister Hassan Qadami told Fars news agency 12 August. He said 110 villages had been hit by the quakes. It was unclear how many people were affected. The quakes struck within 11 minutes of each another, registering magnitudes of 6.3 and 6.4, according to the US Geological Survey. The towns of Ahar and Varzeqan were the worst hit, officials said.
