Two strong earthquakes in the north-western Iranian province of East Azerbaijan killed at least 250 people and injured more than 1,800, according to deputy Interior Minister Hassan. He said around 110 villages had been hit by the quakes. It was unclear how many people were affected. The quakes struck within 11 minutes of each another, registering magnitudes of 6.3 and 6.4, according to the US Geological Survey. The towns of Ahar and Varzeqan were the worst hit, officials said.
