Kax, a transportation center on the ancient Silk Road, maintains its unique Uygur landscape for more than 2,000 years. Now, the city is undergoing a five-year old urban renewal project between 2009 and 2013. The project aims at improving 50,000 dangerous aged houses in the city's old district while sustaining its ethnic features. The investment is estimated at over 7 billion RMB yuan (1.11 billion U.S. dollars). (Xinhua/Huang Zhen) (hy)
