Shintaro Ishihara Comments on Buying Senkaku/Diaoyu islands on Tuesday
September 11, 2012, Tokyo, Japan - Gov. Shintaro Ishihara of Tokyo speaks during a news conference at the city hall after the Japanese government has signed a contract with a private owner to buy three of the Senkaku Islands, southern Japan, on Tuesday, September 11, 2012. Amid intensified opposition from Beijing, which claims territorial rights over the uninhabited islets in the East China Sea, the government decided at a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day to disburse 2.05 billion yen from the reserve fund for the purchase. Prior to the government's plan, Gov. Ishihara announced his proposal to buy the islands, drawing public attention over the administration of the islands. Following Ishihara's announcement, the city hall received 1.45 billion yen in donations for the cause. (Photo by Natsuki Sakai/AFLO) AYF -mis-
