Gannet plunge diving

Gannet plunge diving

Northern gannet Morus bassanus An adult plunge diving in evening sunlight. The gannet is the UK's largest sea bird and it will venture up to 400 miles on fishing trips. Gannets live in huge colonies like this one, usually on offshore islands and they hunt fish by diving vertically from up to 50m above the water and will dive as deep as 30m. They have air sacs in their heads which act like airbags to minimise the impact on their skull whilst diving and they raise one chick per year.July. Shetland
