Fort McKay town lies downstream of the tar sands. The tar sands is the world's largest industrial project and the most environmentally destructive. Many of the residents of Fort McKay are afflicted by skin rashs or are afflicted by cancer. Studies show elevated levels of hydrocarbons and heavy metals near the mining sites. The towns drinking water contains high levels of Trihalomethanes (THM) and Halo Acetic Acids (HAA). The biggest risk from THM and HAA is cancer.
