Horned Lizard, California

Horned Lizard, California

Like his cold-blooded reptilian brethren, this horned lizard likes to soak up heat from the ground during the cool early-morning hours. Black asphalt is an excellent source of stored-up heat, and this guy is taking advantage of it. Horned lizards are sometimes erroneously referred to as horny toads, but in fact are not in any way related to toads. This particular specimen was only about 4" long from his nose to the tip of his tail.
