Funnel web grass spider emerging from hole in ground, California

Funnel web grass spider emerging from hole in ground, California

Though it looks huge in this image, this spider's body is less than a 1/2" long (not counting the legs). I came across his very impressive funnel-shaped web while out hiking, so I waited for the architect to emerge. I didn't have to wait long before capturing this image. The spider is called a funnel-web grass spider. I used a specialized telephoto macro lens to bring out the extreme detail in the subject.
