Afar Depression

Afar Depression

Barchan dunes and associated eroded marine sediments some 20 nautical miles SE of Lake Afdera. The Danakil (Afar) Depression has been inundanted numerous times by changing sea levels and rifting, and the soft clay surface is covered in marine sediments and small sea shells. The temperture in flight was 104°F at sunset. I observed two male ostriches and a string of five or six camels being lead through the bottom of the dry river bed at the base of the valley.
