Artwork based on a scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a microcapillary network, the numerous small blood vessels which directly supply tissues in the body. The SEM is taken from a resin cast of the vessels; an unpolymerized substance is injected into the vascular system & allowed to harden. Tissue is then digested away using sodium hydroxide solution, leaving only a resinous replica of the vessels. The distribution of capillaries depends on the organ or tissue they serve. For example, capillaries in skeletal muscle are seen to be arranged longitudinally to the muscle fibres that they supply.
