Hoover Dam spans the Colorado River in the Black Canyon between Arizona and Nevada, some 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. Constructed in the 1930's, the concrete arch-gravity stucture was intended to provide much needed irrigation and hydro electric power to arid regions of states like California and Arizona.
