CROATIA-BEES-LAND MINES

(130613) -- ZAGREB, June 13, 2013 (Xinhua) -- A bee is seen during research on training bees to detect TNT odour from land mines in Zagreb, capital of Croatia, June 12, 2013. Bees are able to detect odours from 4.5 km away and associate the smell of TNT with sugar. Croatia is on track to become the European Union's 28th member state on July 1, but still clearing 667 square km of minefields or mine suspected areas located in 12 counties and 96 cities and municipalities. These areas are thought to contain approximately 73,000 land mines left over since the Croatian War in early 1990s. (Xinhua/Miso Lisanin)
