Rural elderly living on the poverty line in northeast Thailand
Buriram, Thailand. 11th June 2013 -- An 80-year-old mother of six holds her great-grandson beneath a rudimentary structure that they call home in Thailand's northeastern rice-growing region. The boy's father has abandoned the family leaving the mother and her extended family behind. -- Most of those Thais living either in poverty or close to it reside in the rural areas and work in agriculture. Often left to care for grandchildren, many live in rudimentary wooden houses, use rainwater for drinking and prepare food over open fires.
