Leonardo: DNA test to aid the hunt for Mona Lisa's remains

The opening of the family tomb of Lisa Gherardini Del Giocondo in the ''Martyrs' Crypt'' in Santissima Annunziata church in Florence, Italy, 09 August 2013. Scientists will use DNA testing to find out whether the remains of a woman exhumed in an archeological dig in the Saint Ursula complex two years ago belonged to the model who sat for Leonardo da Vinci's famous Mona Lisa portrait. The family tomb of Lisa Gherardini, which lies in the so-called Martyrs' Crypt behind the main altar of Santissima Annunziata church and which contains the remains of Gherardini's husband and of their two sons, were opened Friday for the first time in 300 years so scientists can compare their DNA to that of a skeleton found in Saint Ursula during a dig by Florence provincial authorities.
