Surin, Thailand. 6th September 2013 -- An elephant with its calf is tethered next to the wooden house of its mahout in the village of Ban Tha Klang, Surin. Each elephant is cared for by a family and a stipend is paid for each animal by the local government. -- Ban Tha Klang Elephant village forms part of an ancient Kui community that has raised elephants for hundreds of years. The Kui reject the employment of elephants in hard labour such as logging, which is more popular in the north of Thailand.
