A Polar Bear cub skull at Alkefjellet, 79 Â° 36'n 18 Â° 27'e in the Hinlopenstretet, Spitzbergen, Svalbard. As the sea ice rapidly retreats, Polar Bears are threatened with extinction. Their diet consists mainly of seal, which they can only hunt on sea ice, no sea ice equals no food and starving Polar Bears. The 2012/13 winter was disastrous for Polar Bears on Svalbard, as the sea ice did not form at all in the Western fjords. Many bears became malnourished and some starved to death.
